Funny Serial. Very good actors.
Can we learn Swedish by listening to serials and movies with sub titles?
Limited variation ear training – smarter and practical
Identifying the same sound consistently, making variation sets with similar sounds, expanding to the new from what is already familiar.
This is focused, efficient, faster and surer.
But, we are reducing the scope. We need more.
One can have more mediocrity or reduce and deepen the quality of the sub skills. Vertical growth first, then widen the repertoire. My students and I prefer confidence and quality before quantity. A language if not pronounced with minimum needed native pronunciation, is not that language. It is just an imaginary attempt.
If you are looking for quality learning, reduce the scope, focus on the next 1% consistency, work on the subskills.
When watching the serial, my mind naturally wanted to know how one says Hallo, thank you and similar words. My ear heard the sounds that were familiar from English or German sounds. Next step would be to know sentences to talk about myself, ask for needs and preferences. These we can’t learn from serial and random sources. We need to sort that syllabus and spend time with it. While listening to random audio, we can listen for words we practiced. The opposite – learning by listening to random words is low efficiency. No need.
